South of Fifth (SoFi)

SoFi“South of Fifth Street” (SoFi) is defined by Fifth Street to the north, South Point Drive to the south, Alton Road the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The neighborhood, predominately characterized by luxury high-rise condominiums, has is a small percentage of townhomes, older apartments (some on the sand), and a handful of small boutique hotels. Luxury condominiums in the area include: Apogee (the most expensive building in Miami Beach), Murano Grande at Portofino, Portofino Tower, Yacht Club at Portofino, Murano at Portofino, Icon South Beach and Continuum I and II –the only two SoFi highrise condominiums situated directly on the beach.

SoFi is a unique upscale neighborhood in that it enjoys all the benefits and excitement of South Beach, yet it feels far detached from the daily “touristy” and nightlife traffic and commotion that comes along with being one of the most sought-after beaches in America.

Within walking distance residents enjoy upscale dining, entertainment venues, a variety of small independent retail stores and boutiques.  In 2009, the area completed an $80 million dollar project on the corner of Fifth Street and Alton Road that contains 180,000 square feet of retail spread over three levels. The modern complex features retailers such as Best Buy, Ross Dress for Less, T.J. Maxx, Staples, Petco, and a Publix.  Washington Avenue, one the best-known streets in South Beach, is only a few blocks away and features some of the most popular nightclubs and designer shopping the Beach has to offer.

SoFi also is home to the Miami Beach Marina, a 400 slip marina that accommodates ships up to 250 feet; South Pointe Elementary School, an “A-rated” K-6 public school; South Beach Park, and South Pointe Park, a $22 million 17-acre bayfront park that offers great bay views and leads to the beach.  The park features wide sidewalks great for jogging, skating or biking; a splash-and-play for kids; big open lawn space with beautiful “golf course-like grass” perfect for picnics, pets, frisbees, flying kites, or simply settling down on a cozy blanket with a good book.

Popular restaurants in the area include Joe’s Stone Crab, Prime 112, Browns Hotel, Nikki Beach Club and Restaurant, Pearl Night Club and Restaurant, Red Steakhouse, Monty’s Bar and Grill, Devito’s Restaurant,  Fogo de Chao Churrascaria, Texas de Brazil, China Grill, and Smith & Wollensky.
